Title - Photo ID mandatory

Railways have asked all passengers travelling in air-conditioned classes to carry any one of the photo identity cards prescribed by the department in original.Passengers who fail to carry identity cards will be treated as those travelling without a ticket and will be dealt with accordingly,Railways said in a press release on Saturday. In the case of a group, at least one passenger booked on the ticket has to be in the possession of an original identity card.Passenger who gets automatic upgradation and those who convert their ticket to air-conditioned classes during the journey need not produce photo identity cards. This has come into effect from February this year.Railways said many passengers travelling in air-conditioned classes were not carrying original identity cards.

Approved cards
According to the press release, the photo identity cards approved by Railways are: voter ID card, passport, driving license, PAN card of the IT department, school ID card, nationalised bank passbook with photograph, credit cards with laminated photograph, ID card issued by Central/State government with serial number and photo, pension pay order, ration card with photograph, Below Poverty Line card, ESI card with photographs, Unique Identification Card (Adhaar), senior citizen card, and Central Government Health Scheme cards with photographs issued to individual family members of Central government employees.
