Favourites ONGC (Dehradun) and Southern Railway emerged winners in the men’s and women’s sections respectively of the Golden Eagle Blue Star all-India invitation basketball tournament on Thursday. While ONGC handed Central Excise (Kochi) a 76-63 defeat in the men’s final, Southern Railway brushed aside South Central Railway 62-43 in the women’s final.ONGC was at its authoritarian best right from the outset. A brilliant steal by Yadwinder Singh, Amritpal Singh’s dunk, and some stylish shooting from Vishesh Bhriguvanshi underscored the team’s all-round flair.Trailing 25-41 at half-time, the Excise team gained ground in the third quarter. However, it couldn’t halt the inevitable.Earlier in the evening, P. Anitha’s neatly-executed three-pointer to initiate Southern Railway’s scoring provided a snapshot of how the women’s final would unfold. At the end of the first quarter, it led 26-13.South Central Railway, notwithstanding a mini-surge in the second quarter, trailed by 10 points at half-time. Southern Railway continued to throttle its opponent and duly won the match.Special awards were given to Ceciline Michael Vinoo, the only Indian referee to have officiated in the under-19 women’s World championship at Lithuania, and P. Anitha, the lone woman player to have represented India in six consecutive Asian basketball championships.
