A.K. Mital, General Manager, South Western Railway, who is holding additional charge of Southern Railway, on Friday inspected Pamban Railway bridge, which is going to celebrate 100 years in 2013-14, at Pamban.He was accompanied by Additional General Manager Ajith Kumar and the Divisional Railway Manager A.K. Goel. Travelling on a trolley, Mr. Mital inspected the functioning of openable part of the bridge, its mechanism and strength. He spent more than 30 minutes. Earlier, he visited Rameswaram railway station and inspected the ongoing development work being carried out at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore.In an informal chat with press persons, the Divisional Railway Manager said the Southern Railway had been working out a plan to celebrate 100 years of existence of the Pamban bridge. Madurai-Tirupathi express would be extended up to Rameswaram. Steps had been initiated to extend the service as soon as possible. The Southern Railway would consider the plea to operate day time passenger train between Madurai and Rameswaram. |
