Motivated by a surge in booking of reserve tickets made online; Indian Railways now will allow passengers to book their train tickets on BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) app. In the latest data Railways found out that there is 12% surge in the number of reserved ticket bookings made online. This also shows that digital payments are becoming more common between train passengers.

It is worth pointing out that before demonetisation 58% of reserve tickets were booked online. By October 2016 Online ticket bookings saw a significant rise and Reserved ticket online bookings rose to 70%.

BHIM or UPI (Unified Payments Interface) App was promoted by current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after demonetisation. According to him this app is specifically built for mobile platforms and will help people to transfer funds instantly between two bank accounts. The highlight of this promotion was that the beneficiaries bank account are not needed for this fund transfer.

Reserved tickets worth around Rs 80 crore are bought through e-ticketing daily, while tickets worth Rs 30 crore are purchased from counters at railway stations.
