With the closure of level crossing number 40 located near Kinassery between Palakkad and Pudunagaram railway station, Kerala has become free of unmanned Level Crossings (UMLC). On Sunday, Railway completed the work of constructing parallel roads on railway land to divert traffic to the maned level crossing.

One of the method to eliminate UMLC is to divert traffic towards manned crossings; however traffic congestion will still be a problem. Using such alternative by Railway has made collector office to seek public opinion. As per all India statistics, 40 per cent of the accidents on the railway network occurs on unmanned level crossings. The railway network in Kerala comprises of 1,045 km and 1,711 km of running track kilometres spread over the three railway divisions of Southern Railway- Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad and Madurai.
