Title - Newborn girl found abandoned in Karnal

A newborn girl child was found abandoned at the Taraori railway station on Saturday morning.After spotting the child, officials of the government railway police (GRP) took her to a local trauma centre where she is under treatment for hypothermia or abnormally low bodytemperature. Sources said a woman had first noticed the child lying in a pit near a railway track and alerted station master RP Kalyan.When no one came forward to take custody of the child, the railway station officials informed the GRP.Dr Nidhi, pediatrician looking after the child at the trauma centre, said the child was less than 24-hour old and was suffering from severe cold. Her weight was reported at 2.4 kg and her condition had improved by the evening.

Meanwhile, civil surgeon Dr Shiv Kumar said the health department had started investigating all cases of pregnancies where a child was delivered in the past 24 to 48 hours.

"It may also happen that the child was born in some other district but was dumped at Taraori. But, I have asked the department to check records of deliveries registered in the past two days in the district," he said.
