It is not going to be all that happy a new year for the millions of Mumbai suburban train commuters with the railways tripling the surcharge levy from January 1.The railways have notified triple Mumbai Urban Transport Project surcharge on both ordinary single journey tickets and season tickets issued for journeys notified within the suburban sections of Mumbai on Western and Central Railways.The surcharge on ordinary single second class journey tickets have been raised from Rs.1 to Rs.3, while that for single first class tickets have been hiked from Rs. 2 to Rs. 6. No surcharge is levied on travels up to 10 km and a fixed surcharge is imposed on single tickets irrespective of the length of journey thereafter. As regards the monthly second class tickets, those travelling between 11 km to 50 km will now have to pay a surcharge of Rs. 30 instead of Rs. 10 earlier, Rs. 45 for journeys more than 51 km and up to 100 km and Rs. 60 for journey beyond 101 km and up to 150 km for which they had to pay Rs. 20 earlier.In the case of monthly first class season ticket, the surcharge will be Rs. 60, Rs. 90 and Rs. 120 for the three slabs, up from Rs. 20, Rs. 30 and Rs. 40 respectively.The quarterly second class season tickets purchasers will have to shell out Rs. 90, Rs. 135 and Rs. 180 for the three categories mentioned above for which they earlier paid Rs. 30, Rs. 45 and Rs. 60 respectively.In the case of first class quarterly tickets, the surcharge for the three categories has been spiked to Rs. 180, Rs. 270 and Rs. 360 respectively, up from Rs. 60, Rs. 90, and Rs. 120 respectively.Like the single journey tickets, no surcharge is levied on journeys up to 10 km under any category of season tickets. The enhanced surcharge would not be levied on tickets issues before January 1. |
