MEMU (Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit) services for the Thrissur sector will be introduced after work on electrifying the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil section is completed, said Rajesh Agarwal, Thiruvananthapuram Railway Divisional Manager.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 55th meeting of the Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee here on Wednesday, he said tender procedures have been initiated for renovating the fourth platform of the Thrissur railway station.

Landing for overbridge
“Once work is assigned to a contractor, it may be completed within two months. Construction of a landing from the overbridge will solve problems faced by passengers on the fourth platform,” he said. Possible measures to improve conditions of railway stations were discussed at the meeting. “Station Improvement Groups have been asked to review amenities for passengers every month.”He said the Railways has taken comprehensive steps to better the quality of catering services by monitoring the functioning of pantry cars, kitchens in railway stations, and units that supply food.

“Those who serve food on trains have been asked to carry bags to collect leftover food and waste. The garbage will be deposited at locations identified by the Railways and treated,” he said.

The Railways has sought the support of the State government to extend or raise rail platforms and start ticket reservation counters outside railway stations.
