It’s been ten years since Kolkata’s circular railway has been operating between Dum Dum Cantonment stations to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Now on 30th it will run its last train as circular railway is ready to give way to Metro’s construction. The construction of 6.87km long metro line 4 will begin between Noapara and the airport. Apart from this construction, a portion between Jessore Road and Dum Dum Cantonment is also being re-proposed to run the metro’s east-bound service. A new parallel line is also under construction to run metro’s west bound service. The total underground construction will be of 1.75km between Airport station and Jessore Road. It has been said that Eastern Railway did not marketed its Circular route to airport properly thereby not generating enough revenue to support itself. Also a total of only 10 services are being run by the railway daily for air-port bound passengers between Jessore Road and Biman Bandar Airport Stations, which is not enough. |
