Mumbai -- The Central Railway (CR) has set a June 1 deadline to catering stall contractors for stopping selling food items wrapped in plastic. It is going to take action against them, if they fail to do so. CR has decided to ban the use of plastic wrappers by catering stalls in the Mumbai suburban section. CR has also served them notices to stop sale of those items immediately. But on the request of catering stall contractors, the CR has given them a June 1 deadline. "Catering stall contractors have requested us to give them some time, till the time stock of banned food items gets exhausted," said Atul Rane, senior divisional commercial manager. "If any stall owner is found selling plastic wrapped food items after the deadline, they will be fined," added Rane. However, CR is not going to initiate any action against passengers who throw plastic wrappers of food items bought from outside, in railway premises. "There is no provision in railway act by which we can initiate action against passengers for bringing such items into railway premises," said Vidhyadhar Malegaokar, CPRO of CR. There were mixed reactions from passengers on this issue. "Passengers staying beyond stations like Kalyan spend more than an hour in trains. They should be able to get something to eat in stations," said Shirish Parab, resident of Badlapur |
