New Delhi: An Indian Army jawan climbed up a 200-foot tower near New Delhi Railway Station on Friday to protest against the alleged harassment by his seniors. The jawan has been identified as K Muthu Kumar and till late night, he was still up at the tower. A police official said that Kumar demands that the Defence Minister, AK Antony, should assure him that he will not be transferred frequently to different postings. He was recruited in the Army on October 21, 1998. Army sources said Kumar was a sapper of the 69 Engineers Regiment (ERE). He had returned from ERE at Army Digital Mapping Centre in Bangalore in March this year. He had asked for premature retirement from the Army, but was sent to Bengal Engineers Centre. He was punished while in ERE. He climbed up a mobile tower earlier also in Bangalore. In a note that Muthu gave to the mediapersons, he alleges that his casual leave was cancelled and another Army official was given his government accommodation. He also claims that thereafter he climbed on to the roof of an office at his unit and demanded that he should be either granted leave or allotted accommodation. However, he was posted in another location.Kumar has allegedly mentioned in the note that his leave was cut short earlier when he wanted to go to his village after his father's death. |
