Title - IOB, SR fight close matches

Close matches were witnessed on day one of the all-India ball badminton tournament conducted by the St. Joseph’s College of Engineering on Sunday. IOB and Southern Railway were involved in close matches stretching to three full games. Among the impressive winners was Southern Railway B, which lost the opening game taking only points, but recovered to win the match in the subsequent games.

Babu Manoharan, Director, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Ananda Kumar, Director, IOB.

The results: ICF bt Muppannas Club, Andhra, 29-12, 29-16; Southern Railway A bt St. Joseph’s B 29-23, 29-8; IOB bt Western Railway 22-29, 29-15, 29-10.

East Coast Railway bt Karakpur14-29, 29-19, 29-24; Southern Railway B bt South Central Railway, 6-29, 29-28, 29-9; BDL, Hyderabad bt VTH Nuzwid 29-17, 29-11.

Southern Railway B bt Karakpur 29-24, 29-9; Hathway, Hyderabad bt Kerala Fives 29-9, 29-19; Southern Railway A bt VTH Nuzwid 29-13, 29-7; East Coast Railway bt South Central 29-20, 29-11.

MCC ‘A’ triumphs

Madras Cricket Club ‘A’ won the V.P. Thirumurthy Memorial inter-club squash tournament beating MCC ‘B’ 4-1 in the final. Cosmopolitan Club ‘A’ finished third after it overcame Madras Race Club (MRC) 3-2.

The results: MCC ‘A’ bt MCC ‘B’ 4-1 (Open: Singles: Bharat Swarup bt Immad 2-0; Doubles: Srivatsan & Ranjoth Singh Aneja bt Armaan & Pradyumna 2-1, Hemant Mehta & Akshay lost to Badri & Immad 1-2; Veterans: Singles: Srivatsan bt Lakshman 2-0; Doubles: S.L. Rajiv Reddy & Cyrus Poncha bt Lakshman & Arun Surendra 2-0).

Third place: MRC lost to Cosmopolitan Club ‘A’ 2-3 (Open: Singles: Aditya lost to Prithvi 0-2; Doubles: Aditya & Aparajitha bt Prithvi & Imran 2-1, Natarajan & Pranay lost to Girish & Vishal 1-2; Veterans: Singles: Richard bt Srikanth 2-0; Doubles: Hari & Ganapathy lost to Ramesh & Imthiaz 1-2).

Markers tournament: Desappa (MRC) bt Prasad (MCC) 2-0.

Sebastian takes honours

St. Joseph’s F. Sebastian won the junior boys’ title defeating schoolmate P. Deenadayalan 5-11, 11-3, 10-12, 12-10, 11-1 in the Krishnaswamy city schools table tennis tournament here.
