Indian Railways has projected good results from its Raftaar project. Railways has tried to improve both average speed and top speed in order to achieve better results. This has been applied to both passenger trains and freight trains.
As per the railway, achieved average speed is one of the key indicators that represent efficiency and productivity of railways. It also indicates how better railways can utilize its assets thereby improving cost effectiveness.

The first route that was chosen under this project was Allahabad-Ghaziabad-Mughalsarai route as it is said to be the slowest and one of the busiest. Railway board says that "mission raftaar" was successfully implemented on this route with help of Diesel Electric Multiple Units and Main line Electric Multiple Units as they have immense capacity to increase train average speeds considerably of upto 20kmph.

Railway is now considering several other routes also to implement such units like - Delhi Howrah route, Delhi Mumbai route, Howrah Mumbai route, Delhi Bengaluru route etc.
