Patna: To mark the 160th anniversary of the Indian Railways and the 11th anniversary of the setting up of the East-Central railway zone in Hajipur, the East-Central Railways (ECR) opened a week long exhibition of the history of the Indian Railways at Bharatiya Nritya Kala Mandir in Patna on Tuesday.

The exhibition was inaugurated by ECR General Manager Madhuresh Kumar in the presence of Railway Board Information Center, New Delhi, Director Seema Sharma and other dignitaries.

Rare black and white photographs depicting the evolution of railways in India and model trains going back more than a century and a half ago not only give an unique glimpse into India’s glorious history of train travel but also the changing political landscape over those years.Calling the exhibition very interesting and informative, Kumar said the exhibition would also be very educational for school children.

Amitabh Prabhakar, ECR Public Relations Officer, in his inaugural speech, gave detailed account of the Hajipur-based East-Central Railways and its relentless effort to make travel more convenient and hassle-free for all.

Bangalore:  The Karnataka government will release Rs 150 crore this month for railway projects in the state being taken up with the Ministry of Railways on a cost-sharing basis, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Thursday.

A sum of Rs 100 crore has already been released in this regard, and Rs 150 crore would be pumped in this month, the Chief Minister said after a meeting with senior Railway officials.

“The remaining amount, including additional would be released this year,” Siddarmaiah said.

In addition to the Rs 350 crore Budget provision made by the Karnataka government for the projects, the state would have to provide another Rs 200 crore as its share as Union Railway Minister M Mallikarjuna Kharge, who hails from the State, had announced additional funding for such projects in Karnataka, the Chief Minister said.

Minister of State for Infrastructure Development Santosh Lad said Karnataka would give within a week a list of projects to the Railways that needed to be taken up on a priority basis.

State officials said the government has taken proactive steps to speed up land acquisiton, including invoking emergency clause, and 2500 acres was acquired and handed over to the Railways in the last three years.

The state government urged the Railways to focus on completing and operationalising ongoing projects that are nearing completion such as Kolar-Chikkaballapura gauge conversion, Kadur-Chikmagalur and Kottur-Harihara lines.

State officials expressed concern that the burden of cost-sharing is high and uncertain. While initial approval for projects is based on line estimates, their cost gets escalated, they said.

They also pointed out that the fund requirement for already committed projects is around Rs 10,000 crore in addition to land acquisition cost.

“Hence, Railways should encourage public-private-partnership when PPP policy has been announced,” officials said.

According to officials, there are 27 Railway projects in Karnataka having a total length of 2876 km and anticipated cost of Rs 22,400 crore. There are 16 projects which are being cost shared by Government of Karnataka.

डीजल की बढ़ती कीमतों, कर्मचारियों के वेतन और बोनस भुगतान के दबाव में रेलवे ने एकबार फिर यात्री किराया बढ़ाने का मन बनाया है। उच्च श्रेणी के टिकटों में इसी महीने से पांच से दस फीसदी तक बढ़ोतरी करने का प्रस्ताव रेलवे ने किया है।

रेल मंत्री ने एफएसी (फ्यूल एडजस्ट कंपोनेट) नीति के तहत जल्द ही किराये में वृद्धि के प्रस्ताव को हरी झंडी दे सकते हैं। रेल मंत्री मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने आज एक बयान में कहा कि वे रेल किराये में वृद्धि पर जल्द ही फैसला लेंगे।

गौरतलब है कि रेल टैरिफ अथॉरिटी के गठन से पहले तक रेलवे में किराया और मालभाड़ा तय करने के लिए ईंधन की कीमतों में तेजी व कमी के आधार पर फैसला लेने का नियम बनाया गया था।

इस आधार पर पहली अक्टूबर को किराया में संशोधन कर नई दर को लागू करना था। राजनैतिक कारणों से अभी तक यह मामला अधर में लटका हुआ है।

इस बीच लगातार डीजल की कीमतों में बढ़ोतरी हो रही है। रेलवे ने पिछले साल की तुलना में इस बार बोनस भी दस फीसदी अधिक देने का फैसला लिया है। इसका भी भार यात्री और माल भाड़े पर डाला जाएगा।

A city court has ordered Southern Railway to pay compensation to a person who sustained injuries when a wooden sleeper log fell from a railway overhead track on the vehicle he was riding in the Reserve Bank of India subway in the city in 2007.Holding the Railway solely responsible for the accident, G.Vinobha, II Assistant Judge of the City Civil Court, directed it to pay Rs. 1.30 lakh with 12 per cent interest from the date of accident.D. Ramakrishna Rao, a computer designer, filed a suit in the City Civil Court against the Southern Railway and sought compensation.On November 1, 2007, the 40-kg log fell on him as he was riding a two-wheeler from his residence towards Parry's corner. Though he was wearing a helmet, he suffered injuries on his neck and shoulders. He fell unconscious and passers-by took him to the nearest hospital where he was admitted and treated for six days.

M.K.Ashokan, counsel, alleged that the accident occurred due to the negligence on the part of the railway. A news report published in The Hindu was marked as an exhibit.

Denying Mr. Rao’s allegation, Southern Railway contended that the track on the RBI subway was made of steel sleepers. Moreover, a sleeper’s weight was 300 kg. The railway also stated that the accident could not have happened due to the falling of sleepers as alleged.

Rejecting the contention, the Judge said eyewitness accounts clearly showed that the accident occurred on the day due to the falling of railway sleeper log on his head while he was passing through the subway.

“The accident occurred due to negligence of the railway in not maintaining the wooden sleepers in a proper condition and the railway is solely responsible. Therefore, the plaintiff has to be duly compensated for injuries and damages,” said the Judge.

Anandpur Sahib:
Local Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu flagged off the Hazoor Saheb-Nanded Express train here today.The weekly train will depart from the Nangal dam at 4.20 pm every Thursday, halt at Chandigarh at 7:08 pm and reach Nanded at 11:45 pm the following day.The train will return on Saturday. It will start from Nanded at 11 am and reach the Nagal dam at 8:25 pm the next day.The train will halt at Anandpur Sahib, Ropar, Morinda, Mohali, Chandigarh, Ambala Cant, Panipat, New Delhi, Mathura, Gwalior and Basmat. It will traverse a distance of 1,870 km.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Rana KP Singh and Ambala Divisional Regional Manager (DRM) AK Kathpal were among those present on the occasion.Bittu said the train connecting two Takhts would facilitate Sikh pilgrims. He said it was on public demand that the Railways had agreed to provide a two-minute halt at the Morinda station.

He would now work for town's rail link with Amritsar, the MP added.
