Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain informed Rajya Sabha today that in last 2 months around 30 percent Shatabdi trains ran late while around 30 per cent Rajdhani trains were late. He also said that large scale maintenance work over the entire rail network is the only cause of such delay in the month of April and June.

“Various steps have been initiated to improve punctuality such as prioritisation of preventive maintenance of assets to minimise asset failures, capacity enhancement projects by construction of additional loop lines at stations, doubling, construction of third line corridors. Besides, punctuality drives are launched from time to time and staff involved in train operations are sensitised,” he said.

64 per cent of Shatabdi trains running through the eastern zone were delayed while 70 per cent Rajdhani trains running in the south east central zone were late.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has warned Indian Railways about its Flexi fare ticketing system that although it helped the national transporter to register an increase in its passenger earnings but it has also made more and more passengers to opt other trains over premier trains.

During the period of September 9, 2016 to July 31, 2017, Indian Railways earned Rs 552 crore from Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto premier trains but it carried 6.75 lakh fewer passengers during the period compared to corresponding period in 2015 and 2016.

The occupancy in these trains has taken a serious blow and even the most profitable AC third class registered an increasing trend of vacant berths from .66 % in pre-flexy period to 4.46 % in post-flexi period.

On the other hand, occupancy of mail and express trains in the routes of premium trains run was found to be much more than the premium trains. With introduction of flexi fares, premier trains became the direct competitors of Airlines to which CAG found that air fare for 13 sectors was actually cheaper than in the train during the period.

The CAG also conducted a survey among 806 passengers in 16 Shatabdi and 11 Rajdhani trains during April and May 2017. To the question 'Given the travel time, flexi fare without value addition, would you prefer to travel by flight/bus', 497 passengers (62 per cent) replied in affirmative, the CAG found.

• 15065  गोरखपुर - पनवेल एक्सप्रेस में 22  और 24  जुलाई को एक शयनयान श्रेणी का अतिरक्त डिब्बा लगेगा

Due to upgradation work of Delhi P.R.S. (Computerized Passenger Reservation System), the  PRS activities  will remain  temporarily closed for 2 hours 55 minutes from 11.45 pm o­n 22.07.18  to 2.40  a.m. o­n  23.07.18. Therefore, all the services of Delhi PRS, i.e. reservation activities, enquiry o­n 139, SMS for delayed trains and internet booking will not be available during the above period.

Due to Line Block to facilitate maintenance works between Chennai Beach – Washermenpet railway stations, changes will be made in the pattern of suburban train services on 21.07.2018 & 22.07.2018 as detailed below. 

The maintenance works are carried out to ensure safe operation of trains.In view of this, passengers may kindly co-operate with the railway administration and bear the inconveniences caused by the changes in train services that are necessitated by the engineering works.

The following suburban trains will be fully cancelled. 

• 43217 MMC – Thiruvallur EMU local, scheduled to leave MMC at 09.30 hrs. 
• 43234 Thiruvallur – MMC EMU local, scheduled to leave Thiruvallur at 14.40 hrs. 
•  43762 Thiruvallur – Velachery EMU local, scheduled to leave Thiruvallur at 11.05 hrs. 

The following suburban trains will be partially cancelled.

22 coaches of Patna Rajdhani will be rolled out soon with traditional Madhubani paintings outside and inside coaches. Railway wants to promote traditional art through its premier trains and as a part of project all Rajdhani trains will receive makeover.

Madhubani - a folk art of Mithila region of Bihar is known for using geometric patterns to carve colorful paintings. There are about 100 coaches that will be painted with Madhubani art.

Besides the Rajdhani, the interiors and exterior of the Sampark Kranti Express and Jansadharan Express will also have the traditional Mithila artwork.

"With the artwork, Patna Rajdhani will have a unique identity while running between Rajendra Nagar station and New Delhi," said Mr Thakur, and added, "Local artists will get an opportunity to showcase their skill on trains."

The entire exercise would cost the Railways about Rs. 1 lakh per coach.

Similarly coaches of trains originating from Rajasthan will receive Rajasthani paintings and likewise.
