New Delhi: Strengthening the security arrangement at rail premises, Northern Railway has provided CCTV surveillance system at important stations including New Delhi, Nizamuddin and Old Delhi in the capital.The CCTV cameras have been provided at platforms and circulating area and their footage is made available in the main control room which is manned by security personnel round the clock.Surveillance cameras are being installed to help security personnel monitor the activities at railway stations. This helps providing security to passengers, said a senior Northern Railway official.He said the recordings are stored digitally for future analysis.CCTV surveillance system has been provided at 20 stations including 12 stations in Delhi area.The coverage of CCTV surveillance system has now been extended to passenger reservation system (PRS) centers also to keep vigil on activities of unauthorised personnel in the ticketing areas.Senior officers at Northern Railway headquarters can now monitor the activities at stations through the surveillance system.Northern Railway is planning to provide CCTV surveillance system at other major stations in a phased manner. |

In a big relief to bi-weekly Bilaspur-New Delhi Rajdhani passengers, berth quota from Nagpur has increased with immediate effect. Central Railway DRM Brijesh Dixit said quota for AC I is consistent at 4 while quota for AC II has gone up from 24 berths to 64 and AC III from 54 to 112. Train number 12441 leaves Nagpur at 8.45pm on every Monday and Thursday and reaches Delhi next day at 10.45 am. |

VISAKHAPATNAM: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has mooted a rail over bridge (ROB) connecting Railway New Colony and Gnanapuram in the city at a cost of Rs 30 crore to ease traffic problems in and around the city railway station.Explaining the project proposal to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Waltair division of East Coast Railways, Anil Kumar, here on Saturday, the civic chief said they would also submit a detailed project report to the state government for approval of the ROB.The GVMC chief also appealed to the DRM to cooperate with GVMC in taking up the service road on the left side of the flyover towards Railway Station in front of the DRM office that is located between the Railway hospital and Officers' Guest House.The civic chief also assured the DRM that GVMC would soon release pending dues worth Rs 1.02 crore to the Indian Railways. He said GVMC had already allocated 25 acres at Mudasarlova as compensation for land that the corporation took for the flyover project from the railways. He informed the DRM that the flyover project would be inaugurated by chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy. |

VIRUDHUNAGAR: With the Madurai railway division extending Karaikudi-Manamadurai-Karaikudi passenger till Virudhunagar via Aruppukottai, the long-standing demand for rail connectivity in the section has finally been met. The extended passenger train was formally inaugurated at Virudhunagar junction on Saturday morning.Viruthunagar - Manamadurai section was closed for broad-gauge conversion work in 2008 and the people in the region were stressing for the speedy completion of the works as the work proceeded at snail pace.After five years, the section was ready for train operation and the section was inaugurated for train operation in the presence of Union minister of state for civil aviation K C Venugopal on July 14. The recently flagged off Puducherry - Kanyakumari Weekly Express was the sole train plying through this section. As the local people were demanding more train services, the division has now extended Karaikudi-Manamadurai DEMU passenger till Virudhunagar.The extended passenger service, train number 76837 Karaikkudi-Virudunagar passenger (except Saturdays) will leave Karaikkudi at 6.15pm and arrive Manamadurai at 7.35pm to leave Manamadurai at 7.45pm and will reach Virudunagar at 9.45pm. Meanwhile, train number 76838 Virudunagar-Karaikkudi passenger (except Sundays) will leave Virudunagar at 6am, arrive Manamadurai at 7.40am to leave Manamadurai at 7.50am and will reach Karaikkudi at 9.35am. The train will stop at Devakottai road, Kallal, Panangudi, Sivaganga, Melakonnakulam, Manamadurai, Narikkudi, Tiruchchuli and Aruppukkottai. |

Nepal has said Sep 6 that the Chinese authorities in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) had agreed to extend the region’s expanding railway network into the neighbouring Himalayan country. Nepal’s myrepublica.com Sep 6 cited the country’s Chief Secretary Leela Mani Poudel as saying an assurance to this effect was given by Mr Luo Sang Jiang Cun, chairman of the TAR Government.The ethnically Tibetan Chinese official has told the visiting Nepalese official that China would expand the rail service to Nepal once the ongoing Lhasa-Shigatse rail service comes into operation. The construction of the Lhasa-Shigatse railway, which has been going on since 2010, is scheduled to be completed by next year.This is the first time China is reported to have given a concrete assurance to extend a railway service into Nepal. Previously, China had only said it would consider Nepal’s request most favourably. “Feasibility study is underway for expanding rail service between Nepal and Tibet. We will immediately commence the process for implementing the plan once railway line reaches Shigatse from Beijing,” the report said Hari Basyal, Nepalese Consul General in Lhasa, quoted Luo as saying in the Sep 5 meeting with Poudel.At the meeting, the Nepali delegation also solicited Chinese support for the construction of a Kathmandu-Lumbini rail service and linking it with Shigatse, the report added. |

Mumbai, Sept 8: A public interest litigation (PIL) has sought a probe by NIA into the 7/11 Mumbai serial train blasts alleging false implication and fabrication of evidence against Muslims by the state ATS in the case. The PIL filed on September 5 in the Bombay High Court has also sought a stay on the trial being conducted by a special MCOCA court against 13 accused, alleged to be members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), for their involvement in the July 11, 2006 serial train blasts. A PIL has sought a probe by NIA into the 7/11 Mumbai serial train blasts. It has sought a direction to NIA to re-investigate the train blasts pending which the 13 arrested accused should be released on bail and trial against them should be stayed. "Different wings of the Maharashtra police have presented different versions at different times about the 7/11 train bombings," the PIL states. It said that even in the 2006 Malegaon blasts, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested several Muslims which now National Investigation Agency (NIA), claims is the handiwork of Hindutva extremists. |
