Labourers associated with the CITU and INTUC will be given equal share of work in the construction of the Kochi metro. As per an agreement reached between the trade unions (TUs) and L&T (contractor entity for the metro rail work) at a meeting on Wednesday, members of these trade unions will be given work in metro work in 1:1:1 ratio (CITU, INTUC and the company labour). An agreement in this regard was reached between the builders and contractors’ associations. For more than a week, an alleged tussle had broken out between the employees associated with the trade unions and L&T officials demanding equal share of work for the employees in the metro rail construction. This had allegedly hampered the construction work at Edappally. According to the CITU Construction Union, Ernakulam area secretary, Manoj K V, the L&T officials have expressed willingness to the terms and conditions put forward by the trade unions.“They agreed to provide equal share of work for the trade unions in the metro rail works in the city. We, in turn, have given them the word that no labour tussle will stand in the way of the metro work,” Manoj said.As per the decision, the piling works of the metro rail will be carried out by trade union employees at the Aluva-Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium stretch just like it is being done in the North RoB preparatory works undertaken by another construction company.“The revised wages for 2013-2014 are still under discussion. However, L&T officials have agreed to pay trade union employees as per the new agreement,” Manoj added. |
