A FORMER historic city railway building is once again in line to be transformed into a new Islamic primary school.

The Al-Madinah Trust has reapplied to Derby City Council for the primary section of its school to be created in part of the RTC Business Park on London Road.

Vigilant youngsters at Rakkipalayam here averted a possible railway mishap by waving a red cloth and stopping a train after they found gaps between the rail tracks on Thursday.

It is the duty of the key man in the railway who travel everyday for three kilometre and correct any defects or problems on the railway track.

According to senior railway officials the pandrol clip, which are used to fasten rails to railway sleepers were stripped off when the Blue Mountain train passed over the track to reach Mettupalayam.

The rail is usually left with a small space. During winter and summer season the rails may expand or shrink and uneven rails may cause accident.

Soon after the train passed, few youngsters, nearby found the track dislodged and stopped the Mettupalayam-Coimbatore passenger train by waving a red cloth and alerting the railway authorities, said Chandran, a passenger travelling in the train.

Senior section engineer and key man arrived at the spot and corrected the problem. The train stopped for about 20 minutes and the services wee resumed after the problems were rectified, he added.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today said that it had, to ensure that road traffic is not disrupted near the busy ITO crossing here, changed its changed the methodology for the construction of subways which will come at the entry of the ITO Metro station to some of the points across the road from the station.    This new subway is being constructed below the busy ITO intersection roads (Indraprastha Marg)  without disturbing the traffic on top, a press release from DMRC said.   The subway, after construction, will have entry and exit points near the Delhi Police Headquarters and the building of the Institute of Engineers on either side of the Indraprastha Marg.    The subway, a part of the upcoming ITO Metro station on the Central Secretariat – Kashmere Gate corridor, is being constructed using the ‘Box Pushing’ technology with which vertical excavation or large scale digging is not required.   As per this technology, six reinforced cement concrete (RCC) boxes are being pushed with the help of hydraulic jacks to create the 48 metre long subway tunnel.    The boxes are being designed and constructed at the site itself. It takes about 21 days to cast one such box. A thrust bed is being created to generate enough force to push the boxes with the synchronized movement of the jacks.   This method is much faster than the conventional cut and cover technology used generally for the construction of subways. In the case of this particular subway, had DMRC opted for the conventional cut and cover technology, then it would have had to excavate the road above causing great inconvenience to the movement of traffic.      ADVERTISEMENT The work was started in June earlier this year and will be finished by the end of September. The condition of the road above will be monitored through various types of instrumentation methods like precise leveling studs on the pavement areas, settlement markers etc, during the entire construction period. The under construction ITO Metro station has six entry and exits points connecting different parts of ITO.    In order to minimize the inconvenience to the movement of vehicles on the roads, DMRC has decided to use the ‘box pushing’ technology for the construction of a number of underground subways in Phase 3.    Apart from ITO, the technology will also be used for the construction of subways as well as entry/exit structures of Metro stations at Dabri Mor, Panchsheel Park, Chirag Delhi, Nehru Place (on the Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden corridor) and Bhikaji Cama Place (on the Mukundpur – Shiv Vihar corridor), the release added.

LUCKNOW: The railway users demanded that information regarding change of platform should be communicated to passengers well in advance. Passengers also suggested renovation of second class waiting hall and provision of A/C in upper class waiting room at Faizabad railway station during the first meeting of the divisional railway users consultative committee for the year 2013-14 on Wednesday.Divisional railway manager Lucknow NR Jagdeep Rai said the earning of the division in 2012-13 has gone up to Rs 1107.89 crore which is 12.63% more than the previous years. For the convenience of the passengers, the stoppage of 17 different Mail/Express trains has been arranged at different stations of the Lucknow division, he said. In the meeting, participants also raised the issue of involvement of touts in 'tatkal' reservation. At the Sultanpur route, the electrification work has been done and about 15 passenger trains and goods trains are running on the route, said the DRM.

Bhubaneswar: The railways have extended the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)-Bhubaneswar weekly superfast Express to Puri. The train will leave Puri at 9.25pm on Tuesdays. The timings and stoppages between Bhubaneswar and LTT will remain unchanged. It will depart at 8.35pm on Sunday on return.

Bathinda: Residents of the trans-railway lines area gheraoed the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ambala, early this morning during his visit to the Bathinda railway station. Camping for their charter of 20 demands, led by former municipal councillor Vijay Kumar, residents pressed the railway authorities for their demands.The DRM, Anil Kumar Kasba, listened to the grievances and assured them of taking action over the same. Later, he left for Sri Ganganagar.Their demands include new 20-feet-wide railway footbridge with ramp facility to enable cycles and two-wheelers to pass in the place of the existing railway footbridge. The present footbridge was constructed in the 1895 and has been repaired twice since then. Platform to platform underground subways have also been demanded for elderly and physically challenged people.They also demanded railway over bridge crossings on the railway lines of Sirsa, Delhi, Ganganagar and Ferozepur and an under bridge at the Sirki Bazaar railway crossing.The iron-made railway footbridge connecting platform No. 3 to 7 has been lying defunct and locked for the past around 25 years. The residents demanded that the bridge be shifted towards the area near the church on the railway road with the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) office located on the Mall Road.“The trans-railway lines area has a population of 1.25 lakh and 17 municipal wards. Despite such a huge number, the ticket window towards Pratap Nagar does not work and even the private one has been closed down. Also there are eight ticket windows at the Bathinda railway station of which only two remain open. We requested that all windows should be made functional,” said Vijay Kumar.

The demand for widening the Thandi Sarak hospital road to 30 feet as well as that of roads around the railway ground was also raised.

People want the godam of railways to be shifted out of the city to ease the traffic bottlenecks. They also demanded that toilets and urinals in and around the railway platforms should be repaired and cleaned regularly.

Mentioning the underdeveloped and poorly maintained areas of the railway colony, the residents demanded that the water tanks should be covered. Around five people, including two children, have got drowned in the tank.

They demanded that the first two tanks be covered and the third one, which has been lying defunct, should be covered permanently and a playground be provided.

The delegation that met DRM included Sanjiv Kumar Soni, Baldev Kumar, Madan Mohan Sahni, Alamjit Singh, Balwinder Singh, Om Prakash and Anjani Kumar.

f Kerala gets zonal tag, Port City demand will get boost without hurdles from K As the pressure for a separate railway division for Mangalore has been gaining momentum despite the strong protest from Kerala, a consensus between the two states is slowly being evolved behind the curtains. Railway sources in Palakkad railways and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) confided that if a separate zone for Kerala is allowed, which has been a long pending demand, Mangalore's division demand will get a boost without any objection from the neighbouring state.

A separate division with Mangalore as headquarters is a long pending demand raised by different organisations and people of the Port City. The Coastal city is literally sandwiched between Palakkad (Southern Railway), Mysore (South Western Railway) and Konkan Railway Corporation. While Konkan railway starts from Thokur, Mysore division has it's border after Mangalore Junction station. Being the tail of Palakkad division, Mangalore has not been getting it's due since long. At the same time, Palakkad division's survival itself is from the freight charges through MRPL and NMPT. In this financial year (2012 -13), the loading from Panambur area alone was 6.495 MT, which contributed for 91.2 per cent of overall loading of the division. Nonetheless Mangalore is the supporting pillar of the division, however, it is by and large neglected in terms of development.

Railway officials say that the major stumbling block for Mangalore division is not Kerala's objection, but the demand is not strongly being pushed by Karnataka itself. “The division demand is heard in Mangalore only. When it reaches New Delhi, the name of Gulbarga is being heard now more than Mangalore,” told an official to Deccan Herald.

SWR or Konkan?

Though the moves for carving out of Mangalore division is going on, sources said that the authorities concerned are yet to decide on where should Mangalore division be included. If KRCL is the option, then problems are plenty. KRCL is not a part of Indian Railway but a separate Railway entity started in 1998. It was running at a loss of more than Rs 10,000 crore and the Central Government is now not in a position to incur the loss by merging the KRCL in Indian Railways.

Kerala's demand

Kerala is the only Indian state having a major place in rail map of India without a zone headquartered in its territory. A  separate zone means the state's projects and new train services will come directly from the Centre and not via Southern Railway. For a zone, three divisions under it is mandatory. If Mangalore division is allowed, then including that, Kerala can fulfill it's zonal ambition with other two divisions, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram. Thus the state is willing to form Mangalore division provided it's zonal demand should be allowed with new division coming under it.

But this unofficial idea among top railway officers and politicians from Kerala is yet to reach Union Railway Minister's office. Kerala is also skeptical about how Karnataka will react to this proposal as Karnataka is for a division which comes exclusively under a zone which is within it's borders.

Palakkad's ill-fate

When Salem division was carved out of Palakkad in October 2007, the Kerala division lost 623 kilometre of it's area in Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore and a sizable part of the revenue. At that time, Kerala has been promised with a railway zone and a rail coach manufacturing factory in Palakkad as a compensatory measure. But both the projects are still in paper only. If Mangalore also goes from Palakkad, then it's better to close down the division, told a railway official to DH.

The Rs 550 crore coach factory at Kanjikode in Palakkad was annouced in 2008-09 rail budget presented by the then Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. Other than handing over 92.04 hectares of land to Railway, nothing has progressed in Kanjikode. At the same time, the Raebareli Coach factory which was announced along with Kanjikode factory has commenced operation.

CHENNAI: Southern Railway on Thursday opened a round-the clock free medical centre at the Egmore railway station in association with SRM Institute of Medical Sciences. There will be three doctors and three nurses to attend the patients at the medical centre. It will have a stock of all essential and emergency medicines, and an ambulance service will also be available. It will serve as an information centre disseminating information on all the hospitals in the city to patients who arrive in the city for medical treatment. The centre will educate the public on seasonal ailments and epidemics. Frequent medical camps will be organised to provide the public with tips and guidelines to lead a healthy life. The medical centre was inaugurated by Dr Vadivel Mugunuthan, chairman of St John Ambulance, Tamil Nadu. Dr Alex Kuruvilla, CEO of SRM Institute of Medical Sciences, said the medical centre at Chennai Central had treated 1300 patients since April 2013. As many as 56 patients were critical and moved to hospitals after administering first aid to them, he added.
