Chakki Bank railway station in Pathankot will be renamed Pathankot (Cantonment) Railway Station. The name change has got the approval from Ministry of Home Affairs and state revenue and rehabilitation department will issue a notification in a day or two.

The station was built by the British in 1926 and mainly served the troops station in the region and Jammu and Kashmir.

"Some 40-odd trains pass through and stop at the station both up and down in a day. For long it was demand of the local people to change the name. This was a small station and before Independence the trains terminated here. Only after Independence, the railway link to Jammu was established and trains then passed through the station," station master K D Sharma said.

Initially, it had only three rooms and later it was converted into a big station with all main and super fast trains stopping at the station.

Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa claimed that he was instrumental in getting the name changed.

PATNA: At least 35 pilgrims were killed and over a dozen injured on Monday when they were run over by a speeding train in Bihar's Khagaria district. Angry locals and pilgrims set ablaze six coaches of the train, brutally assaulted its driver and took several railway officials hostage.Additional director general of police SK Bhardwaj confirmed the death of 35 Hindu pilgrims (Kanwariyas) when the Rajya Rani Express train mowed them down while they were trying to cross rail tracks at the Dhamara railway station on Saharsa-Mansi route of the East Central Railway (ECR).The death toll may increase because detailed information is yet to come from the accident site, he said.The train was travelling from Saharsa to Patna when the accident took place between 8am and 8.30am. The express train does not have a scheduled stop at Dhamara station."The accident took place when pilgrims were trying to cross the railway track after alighting from a local train," he said.Soon after the incident, angry pilgrims and locals set ablaze six coaches, including one AC coach, of the train and attacked railway officials."Some angry people attacked the train driver and seriously injured him. They beat him up mercilessly. Besides, some railway officials have been held hostage by them," a police official said.Bhardwaj said top officials of the district administration have been asked to rush to the accident site.

Chief public relations officer of ECR, Amitabh Prabhakar told IANS over telephone from Hajipur, the railway headquarters near Patna, that the situation went nearly out of control at the railway station following the incident as hundreds of angry people began agitating.

"The railway officials are not in a position to visit the accident site," he said, adding that there was a lot of "confusion".

"It is difficult to say any thing exact for now. It will take another one or two hours to say anything concrete after security forces are mobilised to clear the agitating people," he added.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief at the incident and asked railway officials to launch rescue operations and arrange proper treatment for the injured.

NEW DELHI: Against the backdrop of changed political equations in Bihar, BJP on Monday joined RJD and LJP in slamming the Nitish Kumar government over lack of relief and rescue measures after a rail accident in Khagaria claimed several lives.As soon as the Rajya Sabha met for Zero Hour, Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP) and Ram Kripal Yadav (RJD) were on their feet saying, "Thirty people were killed by Rajyarani Express from Saharasa at Dhamara Ghat this morning but no rescue and relief measure has been initiated after 10 hours of the mishap by the Nitish government which claims good governance."Both the leaders were soon joined by BJP members who stood on their feet, holding Bihar government responsible for the accident.Responding to members' concern, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla said, "The House is saddened over the accident. Minister of Railways is being contacted to apprise the House at the earliest of the steps taken so far."Earlier, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, "government should come out with statement."Paswan said despite claims of good infrastructure, the condition of roads was such that no relief measures could reach the spot, for which he held the state government solely responsible.Yadav joined him blaming the Nitish government for "anarchy" there saying the railway station has been set ablaze and situation was serious.

Ravi Shankar Prasad and Rajiv Pratap Rudy (both BJP) also blamed the Bihar government for the situation.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister AkhileshYadav today exuded confidence that the ambitious Lucknow Metro Rail project, to ease traffic and transportation problem of the state capital, would start in time.On the occasion of the release of 'Development Agenda of UP 2013-2014', the chief minister said, "After the Lucknow project, which is a priority of the state government, projects for other cities would be taken up." Yadav, who was presented the model of the proposed project, also said the funds for the extension of metro in Ghaziabad has been arranged.Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Planning department Sadakant said details of the project were being worked out diligently so that the first phase of the Rs 6,757 crore project could be started by the targeted date of December, 2013.All efforts are being made to obtain necessary approvals and financial sanction from the Centre, he said, adding that operations are expected to commence in December, 2016.A modified Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been approved by the high-powered committee headed by the Chief Secretary, Sadakant said.The constitution of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is underway with the memorandum and articles of the association having been prepared, he said.To expedite the work, an interim consultant is required to prepare detailed designs for which two specialist agencies -- RITES and DMRC -- have been asked to submit proposals, the Principal Secretary said, adding that the interim consultant would be selected by the end of this month.

DMRC is working on the depot design for north-south corridor of the first phase, he said.

The underground portion of the north-south corridor had been reduced from 7.5 km to approximately 3.5 km from Charbagh to Hazratganj, Sadakant said, adding that 22 stations are proposed in the first phase, out of which 3 stations are underground and 19 elevated.

An estimated 6.45 lakh passengers will use this corridor in the year 2020. The peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) of this corridor is estimated to be 20,976 in 2020.

One rake would consist of six coaches with a passenger carrying capacity of 1,574. Initially, the train will run at an interval of 7 to 14 minutes but with the increase in traffic, the interval will be reduced to 2 to 4 minutes. Ads by Google

Chandigarh: Chaos became the order of the day at the Chandigarh railway station as more than 8,000 candidates appeared for the Railway Recruitment Board exam today.Candidates turned up in large numbers to take the PGIMER's entrance exam for paramedical courses.A special Chandigarh-Ambala introduced to tackle the rush failed to serve the purpose as the situation went out of control when the train was about to depart at 3.30 pm.The counters were flooded with candidates. Passengers had it the toughest. Things went from bad to worse when staff at the counter took a break.Senior citizens and women had a tough time buying the tickets. Some were even pushed by the candidates.Ditto was the situation on the platforms as the students were in haste to board the train that was scheduled to leave at 3.35 pm."Thousands of aspirants come to the city to take one or the other exam on Sundays. It becomes difficult for the elderly and women to travel by trains on these days. Sometimes, the staff at the ticket counters do not give us tickets on time and we are made to wait for hours," said 75-year-old Sada Ram.

Railway police today arrested 42 passengers for travelling on roof of trains or in female coaches. "The drive was launched after we got complaints of misbehaviour of male passengers in female coaches. Today at Dadri railway stations around a dozen local passenger trains including were checked by a team of railway police and 42 persons were arrested and fined," Sub Inspector Yogesh Singh said. The drive will be4 conducted regularly at different railway stations on the route, he said.

A railway official said they were waiting for a green signal from the security agencies to run the train up to Baramulla in north Kashmir.“The train service up to Baramulla will be resumed only after getting clearance from the railway security force,” said the railway official.Sources said after a rack was damaged during stone-pelting incidents at several stations in south Kashmir on August 10, the railway police had arrested dozens of youth and suspended the rail operations partially.“As many of the arrested youth are from the north Kashmir, we suspect that there might be some trouble if we ply the train up to Baramulla. That is the reason why the train is plying only up to central Kashmir’s Budgam station. But a decision to ply the train up to Baramulla will be taken very soon,” said an official from the railway police.The daily train commuters from north Kashmir are, however, angry with the railways for plying the train only up to Budgam.
