Mangalore: Railway Sports Promotion Board bagged the championship in both Men�s and Women�s equipped Category at the National Seniors Powerlifting Championships on Monday while hosts Karnataka emerged overall champions in the unequipped category. The Kerala contingent reigned supreme in the inter-State category of the event, featuring 500 lifters from 24 states and four public sector units.The Championship was hosted by Karnataka Powerlifting Association under the aegis of the Indian Power Lifting Federation, Jamshedpur.Y. Raghavendra of Andhra Pradesh, K. Humeshowri of Manipur, P Suresh of RSPB, and Anjali of Uttar Pradesh, were adjudged Strong Man and Strong Woman respectively for the year 2013.

Railway freight traiff will go up from October 1 due to the increase in fuel cost but passenger fares will remain untouched, according to Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
However, he did not quantify the percentage of hike in freight tariff saying it was a budget proposal to review the fuel adjustment component (FAC) after six months."Tariff has already been increased. As per the proposal of the budget, it will be hiked again in October," said Chowdhury on the sidelines of a conference here.Railways had earlier hiked the freight rate by 5.7 per cent in April 1 while linking the fuel adjustment component (FAC) with goods tariff. FAC is linked with fuel and energy prices and calculated accordingly.Asked whether passenger fares will also be considered for further hike, Chowdhury replied in the negative. "No it will be freight only," he said."The FAC is proposed in the budget. It is a budget proposal that tariff will be examined taking the fuel cost in mind after every six months," Minister said.However, he said, "It will be in a dynamic way. If the global oil price will decrease then freight traiff will also decrease," and added "the rupee value...current scenario is volatile. It is a concern for all of us."Railways is in the process of setting up Rail Tariff Authority (RTA) for which it got cabinet approval this month.Once the RTA is constituted, it will suggest the level of tariff for both the freight and passenger fares from time to time taking into account the input cost and volatile market conditions.
While delivering his address at the conference on "Modernisation of Indian Railways - Challenges and opportunities," Chowdhury said India should emulate China's progress in the field and batted for "friendship" between the two countries."It is my wish to travel from Delhi to Beijing in a train because China is our neighbouring country."When we are talking of a barrier-free world, let us dream first. All problems will be solved if friendship between elephant and dragon is established," he said.

Delay in allotment of wagons by the Indian Railways last fiscal and indecisiveness in finalising design of new passenger coaches have taken a heavy toll on the operations of Titagarh Wagons.The company is now looking at alternative areas to stay afloat, including supply of boats to the navy, building bridges for Railways and getting more orders for its French subsidiary Titagarh AFR.Owing to a scandal and Railways’ precarious financials, the Railway Board is yet to issue tenders for last fiscal even though budget announcements for procurement for this fiscal have been made already.“Some orders might come, but there are frequent changes in the Railway Board which impacts order release,” Titagarh’s chairman J P Chowdhury told shareholders.“As per Railways ‘Vision 2020’, there should have been orders for 29,000 wagons in all. Titagarh, with a share of 15%, would have received orders for 3,500-4,000 wagons.But in the last 30 months, what we have received is zero,” said the firm’s MD Umesh Chowdhury.It has started participating in opportunities to build railway bridges “for various freight corridor projects in technical association with Kawada Industries, one of the largest bridge manufacturers in Japan. We’ve also pre-qualified in some of the tenders,” said Chowdhury.Titagarh has also forayed into ship-building by acquiring Corporate Shipyard. “We have some orders which are being executed. It has a dry-dock, and also the technology, licences and approvals required. We are looking at some investments but they would be made cautiously,” he said.

The High Power Committee (Running & Safety) headed by Mr D.P.Tripathi, former Secretary of the Ministry of Food Processing, has submitted its final report to Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar here today.   The other three members of the committee, which was constituted by the Ministry of Railways, were Mr V.K.Manglik, former General Manager, West Central Railway, Mr Amar Nath, former General Manager, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works and Mr M. S. Khan, former Additional Member/Budget, Railway Board.   The committee was constituted to look into pending demands of Labour Federation regarding working hours of Running Staff (Guards and Drivers) and review of Safety Categories staff over Indian Railways.    An official press release said the committee conducted wide-ranging consultation with Railway Administrations, federations and staff all over Indian Railways and prepared a comprehensive report as per terms of reference.    "The Ministry of Railways shall be examining the report for implementation of the recommendations of the committee," it added.

इलाहाबाद (ब्यूरो)। गंगा की बाढ़ ने अब सड़क और रेल मार्ग से निकलने वाले यात्रियों के लिए भी दिक्कत खड़ी करनी शुरू कर दी है। इलाहाबाद-मिर्जापुर मार्ग पर बाढ़ का पानी आ जाने के कारण सोमवार को इलाहाबाद से विन्ध्याचल और विन्ध्याचल से मिर्जापुर के बीच रोडवेज बसों का आवागमन बंद कर दिया गया। इसके साथ ही सड़क मार्ग से इलाहाबाद से विन्ध्याचल का संपर्क भी टूट गया है। दूसरी ओर रेलवे ट्रैक के किनारे पानी पहुंचने से सहमे रेल प्रशासन ने भी ट्रेनों की रफ्तार पर प्रतिबंध लागू कर दिया है। एनसीआर में विरोही-गैपुरा के बीच सभी ट्रेनों को अधिकतम 70 किमी प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से चलाने का आदेश जारी कर दिया गया है। ट्रेन रेलवे ड्राइवरों को भी इसके मेमो जारी किए जा रहे हैं। इलाहाबाद से विन्ध्याचल और मिर्जापुर के लिए करीब दो दर्जन से ज्यादा बसों का संचालन होता है। बताते हैं कि दोपहर के पहले मांडा रोड से विन्ध्याचल के बीच राजमार्ग पर एक फिट तक पानी लग गया है। इसके कारण रोडवेज बसों का आना-जाना रोक दिया गया है। जीरो रोड डिपो के एआरएम सुमन यादव के मुताबिक राजमार्ग पर बाढ़ का पानी आने से बसों का रूट डाइवर्ट कर दिया गया है। अब बसें मेजा, मांडा से लालगंज होकर मिर्जापुर चलाया जा रहा है। इससे करीब बसों को करीब 19 किमी ज्यादा चक्कर लगाना पड़ रहा है। इस कारण किराया बढ़ा दिया गया है। इसके साथ ही विन्ध्याचल से मिर्जापुर के बीच में भी बसों का परिचालन बंद कर दिया गया है। दूसरी ओर इलाहाबाद-मुगलसराय के बीच मुख्य रेलमार्ग पर भी खतरा मंडरा रहा है। रेलमार्ग के आसपास पानी का जमाव होने से रेलवे प्रशासन ने अलर्ट जारी कर दिया है। साथ ही मेल, एक्सप्रेस, सुपरफास्ट समेत राजधानी, दूरंतो और गरीब रथ एक्सप्रेस के लिए गति प्रतिबंध लागू कर दिया गया है। सीपीआरओ संदीप माथुर के मुताबिक छोटे सेक्शन में ट्रेनों को अधिकतम 70 किमी की रफ्तार से चलाने के निर्देश दिए गए हैं।

In a step to make travel a pleasant experience for the disabled and the elderly, lifts and an escalator will start operating at the city railway station in the first week of September.

The station premises were humming with activity on Sunday with technicians fixing an escalator. Three lifts are already in place on platforms one to three. Safety trials are over and certificates have been obtained.

Senior railway officials say the lifts and the escalator cost about Rs.3.5 Crore, and it is another step towards Railways’ ambition to transform the station into a world-class one.

“The Kozhikode railway station falls in the A1 category as annual income from passenger footfalls is over Rs. 60 crore. As per the Railway Board guidelines, A1-category stations have to offer passenger amenities for the disabled and the elderly, such as ramps and escalators, necessarily to elevate it to a world-class station,” Mohan Menon, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad Division told.

He said Railways had decided to extend such passenger amenities to A-category stations and had identified 300 such stations across the country.

“We have to take into consideration an ageing population which is continuing to travel. There is a demand on Railways to make travel experience easier and comfortable,” Mr. Menon said.

Railway officials said more surveillance cameras and car scanners were required to check vehicles. “This security measure will be implemented shortly,” he said.

Asked about the state of baggage scanners on the railway station premises as part of the integrated security system, Mr. Menon said though multiple entrances and exits made security checking a challenge, the scanners were used whenever there was an alert or in case of any “doubt.”

During a visit here earlier in the month, Rakesh Mishra, General Manager of Southern Railway, had promised that development works at the station would be completed soon.

Several demands have been made to improve the station infrastructure, including canopies for the platforms, footbridges connecting the platforms, a south-side entry to the station and an international shopping complex on its premises.

The important suggestions raised by the public and trader groups include improvement of the stations at West Hill, Vellayil and Kallai in the city, completion of the doubling of the Shoranur-Mangalore line, installing an automatic signalling system, electrification of the line, and reducing the running time of trains between the two stations. The demand for the Kozhikode-Mysore line has been revived.

Other suggestions were adding more compartments to trains, starting work on the coach factory in Kanjikode, new trains to Bokaro and New Delhi, via Vijayawada and Nagpur, another to Chennai, and a Jan Shatabdi Express between Kozhikode and Tiruchirapalli.

The Firozabad rail disaster occurred on August 20, 1995 near Firozabad on the Delhi-Kanpur section of India's Northern Railway, at 02:55[1] when a passenger train collided with a train which had stopped after hitting a cow, killing 358 people[2] (although some sources estimate the deaths at more than 400).[3] The accident happened in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh; both trains were bound for the Indian capital, Delhi. The first train, the "Kalindi Express" from Kanpur struck a cow but was unable to proceed as its brakes were damaged. It was then struck from behind at a speed of 70 Kmph[4] by the Purushottam Express from Puri.[1] Three carriages of the Kanpur express were destroyed, the engine and front two carriages of the Puri train were derailed. Most of the 2200 passengers aboard the two trains were asleep at the time of the accident.[5]

Train numbers 16107/16108 Chennai Egmore - Mangalore Central - Chennai (daily) express will be re-numbered as 16859/16860 with effect from September 1. Train numbers 16865/16866 Karaikal - Ernakulam - Karaikal (daily) express will be renumbered as 16187/16188 with effect from September 1.Train number 12653 Puducherry - Mangalore Central (weekly) express will be renumbered as train number 16857 with effect from September 7 and train number 12654 Manglore Central - Puducherry express will be renumbered as train 16858 with effect from September 8. Train numbers 16857/16858 will run via Coimbatore Junction and will not stop at Podanur. Extension of these trains to Puducherry from and to Tiruchchirappalli will be notified later.Train 12998/12997 Hapa - Tirunelveli - Hapa (bi-weekly) express will be renumbered as 19578/19577 with effect from November 1 and 4 respectively.

दनकौर

दनकौर रेलवे स्टेशन जिले का सबसे बड़ा रेलवे स्टेशन है। रोजाना यहां से हजारों की संख्या में लोग अलग-अलग जगह सफर करते हैं, लेकिन मूलभूत सुविधाओं के अभाव में यात्रियों को यहां काफी परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ता है। अधिकारियों की उदासीनता एवं लापरवाही के कारण स्टेशन का बुरा हाल है। पीने के पानी की पर्याप्त व्यवस्था न होने की वजह से लोगों को काफी तकलीफ होती है। वहीं, सफाई-सफाई और टॉयलेट बंद होने की वजह से लोगों इनका इस्तेमाल नहीं कर पा रहे हैं।

रोजाना हजारोें लोग करते हैं सफर : उत्तर रेलवे के दिल्ली-हावड़ा रूट पर अजायबपुर और वैर के बीच स्थित दनकौर स्टेशन विभाग की उपेक्षा का शिकार है। यहां से प्रतिदिन हजारों की संख्या में यात्री वैर, चोला, सिकंदरपुर, खुर्जा, अलीगढ़, कमालपुर, डाबर, टुंडला, हाथरस, सासनी, मारीपत, बोडाकी, दादरी, गाजियाबाद, साहिबाबाद, विवेक विहार, दिल्ली और कानपुर के लिए ट्रेन पकड़ते हैं।

नहीं रुकती एक्सप्रेस ट्रेनेें : स्टेशन पर एक्सप्रेस ट्रेनों का स्टॉपेज नहीं होने की वजह से यात्रियों को पैसेंजर ट्रेनों का ही सहारा लेना पड़ता है। स्थानीय लोग कई बार यहां एक्सप्रेस ट्रेनों को स्टॉपेज देने की मांग कर चुके हैं। इस संबंध में लोग सांसद सुरेंद्र नागर से भी मिले हैं, लेकिन अभी तक इस बारे में कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया गया है।

खराब पड़े हैं हैंडपंप : यात्रियों का कहना है कि स्टेशन पर पेयजल की कोई व्यवस्था नहीं है। प्लेटफॉर्म पर लगाए गए हैंडपंप खराब पड़े हैं। इस वजह से लोगों को पानी खरीदकर पीना पड़ रहा है।

बंद पड़े हैं शौचालय : यहां लोगों के लिए शौचालय तो बने हैं, लेकिन इनपर हमेशा ताला लटका रहता है। इस कारण लोगों को परेशानी होती है। खासकर महिलाओं को ज्यादा दिक्कत झेलनी पड़ती है।

नहीं जलती लाइटें : रात के समय स्टेशन पर अंधेरा छा जाता है। यात्रियों का कहना है कि अंधेरा होने के बाद आए दिन यहां लोगों के साथ लूटपाट और चेन स्नैचिंग की घटनाएं होती रहती हैं। इसे लेकर लोग कई बार प्लेटफॉर्म पर लाइट की व्यवस्था करने की मांग कर चुके हैं, लेकिन अधिकारी इस तरफ ध्यान नहीं दे रहे हैं।

क्या कहते हैं लोग

यहां बने शौचालयों पर हमेशा ताले लटकते रहते हैं। इस वजह से लोगों को काफी दिक्कत होती है। इसकी शिकायत कई बार स्टेशन मास्टर को की गई है , लेकिन कुछ नहीं हुआ। - नीतिश कुमार , स्टूडेंट
