The Japanese rail network - including its fleet of 200mph bullet trains were working normally within 50 days of the earthquake and tsunami which devastated the country and killed, according to the latest official figures, 18,926 people. The astonishing resilience of the Japanese network was outlined by Mutsutake Otsuka, the president and chief executive of East Japan Railway, the world's biggest train company which carries 17 million passengers a day. Not a single passenger was injured during the disaster of March 11 last year, he told the global summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council summit in Sendai, the city which bore the brunt of the catastrophe. When the earthquake struck there were 650 conventional trains and 26 Shinkansen bullet trains on the track on the track.Within seconds, thanks to a network of 28 seismometers - or tremor detectors - emergency brakes were triggered on the trains across the region and the entire network was brought to a halt. |
