A blast suspected to have been triggered by the Paresh Baruah-led faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on a railway track in Sivasagar district brought train movement in Assam to a halt on Thursday night, ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's scheduled visit to the State on Friday.There, was, however, no report of any casualty.The blast occurred just after the pilot engine escorting the Guwahati-bound Intercity Express was travelling between the Longpotia and Bhojo railway stations under the Sonari police station in upper Assam's Sivasagar district.No outfit has claimed responsibility.The blast came amid heightened security measures in view of a bandh called by the ULFA on Friday to oppose the Prime Minister's visit to the inaugural function of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Assembly. In the explosion, three-ft. length of the track was damaged. Restoration work has begun.There was another blast at a power station at Kalakhowa in Jorhat district.The police, however, said there was no report of any sabotage and the blast could be due to overheating of a transformer. |
