If you are in habit of carrying excess luggage then this news might worry you because now railway will strictly enforce the rule of permissible luggage carrying limit. After numerous complaints of excess luggage being towed into compartments, railway has decided to enforce its three decade old baggage carrying rules.

These are the luggage norms in case you are unaware of -

  • Second Class - 35 kg per passenger
  • Sleeper class - 40 kg per passenger
  • AC first class - 70 kg per passenger
  • AC second class - 50 kg per passenger
  • AC third class - 40 kg per passenger
In case you want to carry extra weight you can pay extra money at parcel office that will allow you to carry upto 70 kg on a second class ticket and 80 kg on Sleeper class ticket, 150 kg on AC first class ticket and 100 kg on AC second class ticket. However, that extra luggage will be placed in the luggage van.

If a passenger was found travelling with extra luggage, railway will charge six times the luggage rate as penalty. Officials said unlike at the airports, where the luggage of each passenger is weighed, the railways will carry out random checks among the passengers.
