Yesterday India’s first much touted luxury train was introduced by Indian Railways between Mumbai and Goa. Tejas Express is being advertised for its state of art facilities which is equivalent to services offered by airlines but there is only one problem with this train – which is its average speed. With fare at par with airlines passenger often compare that it is not the facilities they are attracted to, it is the speed that keeps them away. With all hype that this train is able to run at 200kmph, the average speed what railway was able to achieve is less than 80kmph. Due to poor track infrastructure this train cannot run beyond 130kmph.

Point is that Tejas was never a bullet train but with advertisement of 200kmph atleast we can compare that how much distance Indian Railways have to cover to achieve those speeds. So let us find out where this train stands in front of other high speed trains in the world –

  • Sanghai Maglev, China – achieves average speed of 251 kmph with top speed of 434kmph.
  • Harmony CRH 380 A, China – Achieves top speed of 380 kmph
  • AGV Italo, Italy – achieve top speed of 356kmph
  • Simons Velora EVS 103, Spain – achieves top speed of 350kmph
  • Talgo 350, Spain – achieves top speed of 2174 kmph and was launched way back in 2005
  • TVG Euro Duplex, France – 360kmph
  • TSH R700T, Taiwan – 300kmph
