The daily flow of passengers at the Kalupur railway station in the city has increased to over 1.40 lakh from the average 90,000 on a daily basis owing to summer vacations.Keeping this in mind, the Railway authorities have managed to increase the number of coaches and trains to ensure all the additional passengers reach their preferred holiday destinations.Seven vacation trains especially connecting to Mumbai and 16 additional coaches in 12 pairs (24 trains) in the existing trains will be utilised to facilitate the mad rush of the passengers at the city’s railway station.Speaking to DNA, sources from the railways department, said that the passenger flow starts increasing from April onwards and to manage it each year, more trains and coaches are required to be added. “This year we have added seven holiday special trains, on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai tracks,” the official said.Six AC three-tier coaches and six sleeper coaches been added to various trains. “We will augment 16 coaches in 24 trains on a temporary basis in several trains from April 27 to June this year,” he said. Of the 16 coaches, three coaches will be augmented from the first week of May. Trains enroute Amritsar, Sonpur, Jammu Tavi, Kanpur, Asansol, Patna, Puri, Kochuvelli, Sultanpur and Madurai will be augmented with these additional coaches. “Each train coach accommodates 78 passengers. So these additional coaches will accommodate around 1,300 more passengers per day,” a source said. Apart from that, paying heed to the rush on the trains on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route, the Duronto Express has been made a daily train from April 26. “There are seven special holiday trains which connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai,” the source said.Currently there are 54 different trains that connect the two major cities. These trains include both weekly and daily trains, the source added. |
