A few hundred people from the northeast, who had left the southern states following rumours of possible reprisal attacks on them in the wake of the violence in lower Assam, left Guwahati for Bangalore on a special train on Saturday amid tight security.
There is a special (security ) team comprising 23 RPF and nine GRP personnel escorting them till Bangalore.Passengers will be boarding at various places. We have not provided free tickets and they have to pay the normal fare. There may be another special train on September 5, said state forest and environment minister Rockybul Hussain.
Hussain, along with agriculture minister Nilomoni Sen Deka, saw the passengers off at the railway station, distributed food among them and assured them of their safety.
The special train was not as crowded as expected.
Tezpurs Ganesh Thapa, who works at a mall in Bangalore, said he left the city on August 16,fearing for his life after the rumours.I left hoping I would return as soon as things return to normal.I got to know about the special train.Lets see what happens.
CM Tarun Gogoi had promised to run special trains from August 30 to facilitate the return of those who left southern states.
Most passengers were under the impression that the journey would be free and complained that the railways were overcharging for the special train.I had to pay extra money for the tickets.I thought that it would be free as we didnt pay when we returned from there. There were brokers who also wanted to take advantage of the situation. They are also charging extra for the tickets as well, complained one passenger.
