Title - Eastern Railways surpasses targets, manages 26% growth during April-May, 2012-Railways-Transportatio

KOLKATA: Eastern Railways registered a 26% growth in revenue to Rs 1101.81 crore during April-May 2012, surpassing its proportionate target fixed by Railway Board of Rs 1074.21 crore for these 2 months. During the corresponding period last year, the division earned Rs 873.51 crore.

Revenue from passenger traffic touched Rs 268.95 crore during April-May 2012 against Rs. 249.93 crore during the previous corresponding period - a 7.61 % growth.

Revenue from freight traffic saw a 35% growth to Rs 794 crore during the period, against Rs 588.35 crore during the corresponding period of last year.

According to statement released by Eastern Railway, freight traffic set a record by carrying 10.606 million tonnes of freight traffic in first two months of the current financial year surpassing the proportionate target set up by Railway Board of 10.328 million tonnes for these two months.

During the corresponding period last year, the division carried 9.288 million tonnes of freight traffic - an increase of 14.19%.

Among the total loading this year, coal alone amounted to 7.322 million tonnes against 6.163 million tonnes during the previous year. General goods amounted to 3.284 million tonnes this year.

"There was remarkable achievement in carrying passenger traffic of Eastern Railway in April and May 2012. During these 2 months, Eastern Railway carried as many as 19.56 crore of passengers as against 18.82 crore of passengers carried during April-May 2011. It recorded an improvement by 3.86 % this year over last year.
