Work began under “mission raftaar” for Indian Railways with an estimated cost of Rs. 10,000 crore. The first route that will benefit under this project will be Delhi – Howrah and Delhi – Mumbai routes. Gatimaan Express that runs between New Delhi and Agra achieves a maximum speed of 160kmph which is highest in Indian History. Indian railways is trying to achieve speeds over a larger period of time especially on long distance trains. Currently Rajdhani on Delhi Mumbai route achieves a top speed of 130kmph. The work will include – strengthening of tracks, up-gradation of signalling system and fencing of tracks on vulnerable sections. For Indian railways these corridors are busiest with 120 passenger trains and atleast 100 freight trains are running daily on Delhi – Howrah route while 90 passenger and almost 90 freight trains running daily on Delhi Mumbai route. With better speed railways can also achieve better average speeds which currently is not even 100 for premium trains. It will also help to cut travelling time which is one of the major causes for travellers opting other modes of transportation. Also it will open up space for launching more trains on both the routes. As per railways currently 70% of Delhi – Mumbai tracks are compatible with speeds of upto 130kmph, therefore only 30% off the total length are to be made in compatible to hold speeds of 160kmph. |
