As a confidence-building measure, police have been told to deploy a large number of personnel in areas where northeastern people reside.
“Patrolling will be done and security provided to properties of those who have already left Bangalore. Police will hold peace committee meetings. This will involve all sections of society,” Shettar said. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the next few days too.”
After meeting police top brass, Shettar and Ashoka approached the large number of people from the northeast who had gathered at the CM’s home office. Ashoka told them: “Nobody can touch you. The government is with you 24/7. In case you feel threatened, you can call police.”
The CM said he would not allow Karnataka to be a place for clashes on grounds of region, caste or race. “Karnataka is safer than Assam and, therefore, I appeal to panicky people of the northeastern states to stay back in Karnataka,’’ he said.
Besides the Prime Minister, the CMs of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh also spoke to Shettar.
All trains have been given security till the Karnataka border. Police estimate more than 2 lakh people from the northeast live in Bangalore.
