Mumbai-Pune train journey is set to become local. Central Railway (CR) has sought railway board permission to run EMUs on the harbour line between Kurla and Shivaji Nagar in Pune. The main hurdle in the plan is a railway rule that trains going beyond 160 km should have toilets. The distance between Kurla and Shivaji Nagar is 180 km.CR has petitioned the railway board to make an exception.Meanwhile, EMUs are being modified to include six motor cars and work to connect suburban and main lines in Panvel has begun.CR general manager Subodh Jain said: Additional motor cars are a must to cross the ghats after Lonavala. We will soon get exemption from the 160-km rule. "A crossover will have to be provided from Panvel suburban station to Panvel main line station for connectivity to Shivaji Nagar.'"The trains will originate and terminate at platforms 9 and 10, Kurla station. Between Kurla and Shivaji Nagar, they will halt at Chembur, Vashi, Belapur, Panvel, Karjat and Lonavala, Dehu Road and Chinchwad. |
