Ahead of a trial run, Chief Commissioner Railways Safety (CCRS) Tuesday inspected the Qazigund-Banihal railway tunnel in South Kashmir. The tunnel is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister on June 25. A railway official said the inspection was a mandatory exercise to check the safety measures of the tunnel prior to its trial run. “The CCRS is still carrying out the inspection and if he approves the safety measures, a trial run will be carried out Wednesday,” said Chief Controller of the Railways, Vikram Jeet Singh. The CCRS, Raj Kumar Kardam, was accompanied by several other railway officials while conducting the inspection. The 11.2 kilometer long Qazigund-Banihal Railway Tunnel, named T-80 or the Pir Panchal Tunnel, is the longest railway tunnel in South Asia.
