The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a flagship unit of the Maharatna Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has set benchmark in the turn-around time for Railway wagons.During the first four months of the current fiscal, BSL has been successful in recording increase in the number of rakes dispatched within the free-time allocated by Railways, informed Bhushan GM (Traffic) BSL. He also lauded the efforts of his department in achieving this feat.BSL is largely dependant on the Railways for its transportation needs. Supply of raw materials for the Plant’s operation, dispatch of finished products to its customers as well as movement of material within the plant premises is done primarily through Railway wagons. As compared to the beginning of this fiscal, BSL registered an almost 28 per cent decline in the wagon detention period till the third week of July with respect to the steel dispatch. Similarly, detention time with respect to pig iron dispatch has also been brought down to 50 per cent during the same period. From the point of view of number of free steel rakes dispatched within free time, the figure has gone up from 12 in April to 19 rakes till mid-July.While these figures hint at an overall improvement in operational efficiency with respect to BSL’s Traffic department, the betterment in turnaround time also implies availability of more wagons for Railways for utilisation elsewhere. The Railways have appreciated the efforts made by BSL in bringing down wagon detention time. The BSL team is now committed to maintaining this trend and even improve upon their performance for bringing down the wagon detention period, said the BSL officials. |
