For the hardcore environmentalists and tree conservationists, here is something to cheer about. The estimated-to-be 75-year-old Bodhi tree alongside Uthukuli Road is facing the axe to facilitate an infrastructure development project on a land owned by the Railways here. But thanks to an initiative by NIFT-TEA Knitwear Institute, the tree is going to ‘live’ for many more years to tell the story of transformation that Tirupur witnessed, from a small dusty town to an export hub of excellence, to the generations to come.“We are going to uproot the tree using scientific methodology without disturbing its root system and transplant it on NIFT-TEA Institute campus here,” NIFT-TEA chairman Raja Shanmugham told The Hindu .On hearing the news of the authorities contemplating to fell the tree, the NIFT-TEA team, led by Mr. Raja Shanmugham, approached the Railway officials to get the nod for its transplantation. |
