Title - Bhubaneswar Railway station to become free from Water logging
Posted by : RailEnquiry Admin on Mar 16, 2018 - 10:15:23 AM

During heavy rains, Bhubaneswar Railway station suffered heavy water logging thereby affecting signalling system and movement of trains on Howrah - Chennai main line.

The main reason of water logging was inefficiency of municipal drainage system that connects to surrounding areas of station. Accumulation of water made various points non-functional leading to signal failure. Even passengers had to walk within the flooded area causing huge inconvenience.

To get rid of this problem micro tunnelling methodology has been adopted. Under this methodology, concrete pipes of 1.8 metres diameter were used. These pipes were laid down for 104 meters at South end of Bhubaneswar yard. This will provide continuous support to the excavation face by applying mechanical or fluid pressure to balance groundwater and earth pressures. This is the first time, micro tunnelling has been used in Indian Railways anywhere across the country.
