As many as 1200 passenger and freight trains are running through country’s most sensitive wildlife habitat. These trains post a major threat to India’s wildlife as they run through protected areas and corridors in eastern and Central India, home to many endangered species including tigers and elephants. Through a RTI query the information has come out that passenger trains runs daily or at least four times a week that possess a major threat to major wildlife habitat. The RTI query also reveals that there are major sections off the route that cuts through wildlife sections, does not even have speed restrictions. Between 1987 to 2010 as many as 150 elephants were killed after they took a hit from train. Such figures though are not accounted for tigers while forget reptiles. Apart from elephant’s documentation there is no documentation for leopard, bears, tiger or any other animal. |
