fter years of neglect, the approach roads under the Janak Setu flyover, connecting the Delhi Cantonment railway station to Dhaula Kuan, will finally be relaid. The road, which falls under the jurisdiction of Delhi Cantonment Board, is currently in a shambles. Driving through the stretch causes a lot of inconvenience to commuters going to Delhi Cantt station. The Delhi division of northern railways took up the matter with the cantonment board and requested it to repair the roads connecting the station to Dhaula Kuan. “We renovated the Delhi Cantt station in 2009 and made it one of the best stations of northern railways. But the approach road to the station still remains in a shambles,” said a railway spokesperson.A lot of elite trains, including the only running steam engine train — the Steam Express — pass through Delhi Cantt station. “Hundreds of foreign tourists’ board trains from Delhi Cantt station every day. Bad condition of approach road doesn’t reflect well on the image of the Capital,” the railway spokesperson added.Traffic snarls on the 1 km stretch have become the order of the day due to the bad condition.Around 50,000 commuters use the road to reach the station on a daily basis as 48 trains pass through the station, including a Shatabdi and a Rajdhani Express. The Delhi Cantonment Board, after being persuaded by several authorities and railways, has finally floated the tenders for the road and the work is expected to be completed before monsoon. A foot overbridge is also being planned on the stretch. |
