Borjhar, Aug. 19: Schedules of several trains, including the Rajdhani Express, went haywire as the Puthimari unit of the All Assam Students’ Union staged a rail blockade for over four hours at Kendukona in Kamrup district today.
Around 600 protesters squatted on the tracks demanding regular stoppage of the Bongaigaon-Guwahati Intercity Express at Kendukona railway station and development of the station itself.
The Manas Rhino Passenger was held up for over four hours and NF Railway sources said the Rajdhani Express coming from Dibrugarh had to be diverted via Goalpara while the Delhi-bound Northeast Express and Gujarat-bound Guwahati-Okha Express started two hours late.
Senior officials of Rangiya sub-division, sub-divisional police officer Rakesh Roushan and circle officer of Kamalpur revenue circle N.J. Bhagabati rushed to the site. The track was reportedly cleared around 11am after Kamrup deputy commissioner J. Balaji promised to look into the demands of the protesters.
Anowar Khan, executive member of AASU’s Kamrup district unit, said the blockade was lifted after “the Kamrup deputy commissioner gave an assurance over phone.”
Sources said a meeting would be held on August 21 with representatives of the students’ union, the Kamrup deputy commissioner and NF Railway officials.
