A former civil police officer was arrested by the Railway Police in connection with a theft in Venad Express on Monday.

The arrested person was Sreekumar, 44, of Thiruvananthapuram, who was dismissed from the police department as part of disciplinary action.

According to police officials, the incident occurred on June 30 at Angamaly when the accused stole a bag containing `1.29 lakh and two mobile phones, from a passenger.

“The train was going from Shoranur to Thiruvananthapuram. Sreekumar, who was in an inebriated condition, snatched the bag and got down at Angamaly Railway Station. The victim, after few days lodged a complaint and we started investigation on the matter,”police officials said.

The police, after receiving the complaint started to trace the signals of the stolen mobile phones.

On Monday, Sreekumar who was sitting at the Ernakulam South railway station was arrested by the police.

“He was sitting at the railway station in suspicious manner. We took him into custody and interrogated him. While checking the baggage with him, we found the mobile phones with same IMEI number of stolen mobile phones. Later the victim arrived and identified the bag and mobile phones,” a police official said.

During the interrogation, Sreekumar confessed that he stole the bag. He had spent all the money and gave some to his family members. He was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody. We will seek his custody for further investigation”, he said.
