In an effort to create awareness among the passengers about safety guidelines that they need to follow while in train and on platforms, a safety campaign was conducted at the Salem Railway Junction on Monday.

City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali was the chief guest for the campaign that was led by Sujatha Jayaraj, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division. Others present include P. Kalimuthu, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, K. Yesuratnam, Senior Divisional Safety Officer, S. Parthasarathy, Assistant Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force, and other railway officials.

During the campaign, passengers were advised not to carry inflammable materials like kerosene, LPG cylinders and stoves and help the railways ensure safe journey to all passengers. They were also requested to observe the smoking ban already in place in railway premises, including coaches, platforms, waiting halls and rest rooms as this would also result in fire accidents. Passengers were also informed that such acts were punishable under Sections 164 and 165 of the Indian Railways’ Act 1989. Pamphlets were distributed to passengers and stickers were pasted on the coaches soliciting the passengers’ cooperation in this regard.

Railway officials said that such safety campaigns were also being planned in other major stations of the Salem Division, in Erode and Coimbatore.
