Title - Traffic hit as agitation continues

Demonstrations, blocking of trains, observance of fasts, formation of human chain continued in the district on Monday to exert pressure on the Union Government to ensure that India voted in favour of the U.S. resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nation’s Human Rights Council.

More than 6,500 students took part in various forms of protest.

A group of students from various colleges sat on railway tracks at the Madukkarai Railway Station.

Railway authorities detained the Shoranur – Coimbatore Passenger at Ettimadai and Coimbatore – Shoranur Passenger at Podanur. Train services on the Podanur – Palakkad section was disrupted for nearly an hour.

Army camp

Later, the students marched towards the 93rd Regiment camp of the Army at Madukkarai on the busy Coimbatore – Palakkad Road.

The police prevented the students at the gate. The agitation affected inter-State traffic.

Students staged demonstrations at Othakkal Mandapam, Malumichampatti, and Kinathukkadavu.

State youth wing secretary of MDMK V. Easwaran addressed the students at various places.

Students of Bharathiar University continued with their agitation on Monday.

They sat on the university premises with with their hands tied and mouth gagged.

Nearly 250 students of the Anna University began an agitation at Jothipuram, near Periyanaickenpalayam.

Students of arts and science colleges and engineering colleges joined the protest at Karumathampatti, Karamadai, Thirumalayampalayam, KG Chavadi, Nava India, and Peelamedu.

The police prevented a march by over 400 students of various colleges on Sathyamangalam Road.

Hundreds of students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University were on a protest inside the botanical garden.

A few residents of Pillayarpuram, near Sugunapuram, hoisted black flags atop their houses and establishments condemning the Union Government for not acting tough on Sri Lanka.

Eight law college students continued with their fast for the eighth day at the MDMK’s office on VKK Menon Road.

A group of law college students and lawyers formed a human chain, near the Combined District Sessions Court complex and staged a demonstration.

A group of former Law College students gained entry into the office of the Principal General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited on Bharathi Park Road as part of the protest.

In Pollachi, a fast was observed at Thiruvalluvar Thidal, which was addressed by leaders of various political parties. Students of an engineering college blocked road resulting in disruption of traffic along the Pollachi – Udumalpet road.
