Title - Railway Ministry to set up Inland Container Depot in Tripura

Ministry of Railways has drawn up plans for setting up an Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Nischintapur to facilitate container-cargo transportation in the proposed Agartala-Akhaura rail route, Anil Kumar Gupta, Managing Director (MD) of Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), Ministry of Railways said here today.

The central PSU has been undertaking logistics support in container and non-container cargo transportation since 1989. It currently operates with 62 terminals nationwide, nine of which are located in the eastern region.

The lone ICD in Northeast at Guwahati has been functioning for the last 25 years. The terminal handles over 5,000 containers per year. However, trade has got a huge potential in the region, especially eyeing at the growing bilateral understanding with Bangladesh.

“CONCOR has chalked out plans for connecting Ashuganj port in Bangladesh with Akhaura. An ICD would be set up in Tripura for the purpose”, said Gupta. Preliminary discussion on the issue was held with Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Chief Secretary Dr. SK Panda today, he said adding that officials of the railway ministry would visit the state again shortly to conduct a feasibility study on the prospects of setting up ICD in the state.
