The long-awaited pre-paid autorickshaw/taxi service will start functioning at the Udupi railway station here shortly.

Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju told The Hindu on Wednesday that the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) had issued instructions to the contractor to set up a kiosk at the Udupi railway station from where pre-paid autorickshaws and taxis could operate. The kiosk was likely to come up in 15 days.

The plan for pre-paid autorickshaw/taxi service would be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, pre-paid autorickshaws would start operating from the kiosk in about a month.

Pre-paid taxis would start operating in about four months after operation of pre-paid autorickshaws in the second phase.

The responsibility of smooth functioning of pre-paid autorickshaws and taxis would be taken up by the police who would at the kiosk round-the-clock, he said.

With this system coming into place, passengers would not be overcharged, Mr. Reju said.
