As the death centenary of the pioneer of Matheran light railway falls on Saturday, his descendants await the renaming of Matheran station after their ancestor.“Sir Adamjee died in on August 11, 1913, and even as his centenary death year approaches, there is no honour for the person who pioneered the line. We have approached the railways, took our battle to the court and are awaiting justice,” says white-haired 45-year-old Ali Akbar Adamjee Peerbhoy, second great grandson of Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy, who built the line as a family enterprise more than a century ago.The 19.97-km railway stretch between Neral and Matheran in Raigad district of Maharashtra has already been included by the UNESCO. The two-feet-wide rail line is on its tentative list of mountain railways in India.“The railways is our family’s creation and we would like the government to honur Sir Peerbhoy by renaming Matheran light railway after him,” adds Peerbhoy, whose request was recently acknowledged by the UNESCO.The third-generation Peerbhoys live a well-settled life, shuttling between Matheran and Mumbai. The family, two sisters Fatima and Zainab and three sons Husain, Ali Akbar and Ali Asgar, owns three resorts at Matheran and also run a charity at Saurashtra and a school near Neral.“One day after coming to Neral, Adamji wanted to go to Matheran. But there was no mode of transport to go up .Sir Adamji was unhappy. He returned to Mumbai, determined to run his own railways to Matheran. This historic decision changed the destiny of Matheran. The next time he visited Matheran was only after his own railway was built,” Peerbhoy adds.
