Chennai: Southern Railway is planning to fill up vacancies in their safety wing by end of this year. In response to a TOI article, ‘Staff crunch hits railway safety’, which appeared last Friday, Southern Railway has said that around “3,080 posts in the safety are likely to be filled up by November 2012 for which examinations have already been conducted.”
    Between 2011-12 and till June this year, 7,470 people have been recruited. “Filling up vacancies through promotion and recruitment is a continuous process and railways takes all measures to ensure that vacancies do not compromise safety,” said a statement from the railways.
    Institutional training facilities provided by various departments are utilized, in addition to on-the-job training. High priority is being given to modernise equipment and replace them on conditional basis while functioning equipment are monitored and stipulated procedures are observed to ensure safety on trains.
    “Safety related problems have been on the decline due to continuous upgrade of equipment. Research and development is conducted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and other reputed technical institutions.”
    Southern Railway is also reviewing requirement of essential items concerning safety at various levels. Action will be taken to clear impediments.
