The Corporation Council has entrusted a team of councillors and Standing Committee Chairmen to visit Veli, where garbage is being dumped for the construction of railway platforms, to check whether the process is being carried out scientifically. The decision was taken by Mayor K Chandrika after BJP and LDF councillors in the Council were up in arms against the invoking of Section 144 in the city with regard to waste management and specially against the dumping of waste at Veli against the will of the locals. ‘’If the sentiments of Vilappilsala residents can be taken into consideration, then why not those of the people of Veli? It was a meeting of UDF leaders who took the decision to dump waste at Veli,’’ alleged BJP’s Asok Kumar. The Mayor said that the team headed by Deputy Mayor G Happykumar and having Works Committee Chairman, Health Standing Committee Chairman, UDF leader Johnson Joseph, BJP leader Asok Kumar and councillors of Karikkakom and adjacent wards as members should visit the site soon and submit a report.

Retail Issue
The Corporation came out heavily against retail giants at the Council meeting on Monday by deciding to issue notices to Big Bazaar and English Indian Clays to shut down business in the view of reports submitted by Health officials in the Corporation. It also entrusted the Health Committee to look into the issue of licence-renewal of two Reliance Fresh outlets - at Jagathy and Kadakampally.
