KOLKATA: The Rajdhani and Duronto Expresses originating from Howrah and Sealdah stations will soon have fire alarm systems in all coaches.Gradually, all trains will have this facility in the air-conditioned coaches, which will ensure more safety for passengers, said Railway Board officials. In July, 2012, over 30 passengers were killed after a coach of the Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu caught fire near Nellore. The officials, however, said that for the time being, only air-conditioned coaches would have the fire alarms. The system has already been tested on the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and a rake of the Ranchi-New Delhi Rajdhani has been equipped with it."We expect that the Howrah and Sealdah Rajdhanis and the Durontos and Shatabdis will soon be equipped with this system," said a railway official in Kolkata. "This will prevent any accident caused by fire on the trains. The coaches are being fitted with this system at the Rail Coach Factory and sent to various railways."The system has been developed to check and sound an alarm to passengers during train journey. The alarm gives sufficient time to passengers to shift to a safe place, said officials. "The automatic fire and smoke detection system is based on 'Very Early Warning Smoke Detection System (VEWSD)' strategy to detect smoke/fire at the incipient stage of smoke or fire through continuous multipoint sampling and analysis of the coach environment. The system is suitable for controlled environment for AC coaches," the official added. |
