Jalandhar: An attempt of hundreds of supporters of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, accused of sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl at his ashram, to stop trains at the Sodal railway crossing was thwarted by the police here this afternoon.The supporters, including a large number of women, had gathered at a shop near Patel Chowk, where they organised prayers for over two hours. They were then heading towards the crossing in the form of a rally when they were intercepted by a heavy posse of police at the Gazigulla locality.The ADCP (Headquarters) Navjot Mahal, ADCP-I, Naresh Dogra, ACP (West) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu, ACP (Central) Dalbir Singh, SHO, Division Number 1 police station, Balbir Singh, and SHO, Division Number 8 police station, Kewal Kishan, had reached the spot along with force from the police stations.As Asaram supporters tried to resist the blockade, nearly 33 of them, including 20 women, were rounded up and taken away to the New Baradari police station in a Punjab Police bus. The supporters continued to resist the move and raised slogans in favour of their religious guru and against the police for "victimising" him for no wrong done.The SHO, New Baradari police station, Subhash Chander said all of them were released on bail after initiating proceedings against them under Section 107/150 of the CrPC. The ADCP-I, Naresh Dogra, said the step was taken to stop unnecessary harassment of public. |
