Even as closed circuit TVs and surveillance cameras have become an inevitable components of security systems at railway stations, the integrated surveillance system planned here at the South Railway Station is yet to become a reality.

The project of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was declared at least two years ago and Railway officials had been keen in implementing the system.

However, the delay in procuring cameras from a German-based company has resulted in the delay, officials said.

According to Ernakulam area manager P L Ashok Kumar, they authorities are yet to receive the 62-cameras in the integrated surveillance system at Ernakulam Junction station.

“As part of the project, cameras will be installed at every nook and cranny of the station. Every action taking place in the  station will be monitored under a common unit at the station. However, we are unable to make any follow-ups due to practical difficulties. Hopefully, it will be implemented soon,” he  said.

A proper integrated surveillance system is crucial to keep security intact as was proved in the recent Hyderabad twin bomb blast case.

Cabins meant to monitor the movements of passengers at the railway station has already been completed.

Meanwhile, the parcel and luggage scanners that were brought to Ernakulam Junction railway station months ago are also left neglected outside the station premises. Lack of proper coordination with the contractors and the Railways is the reason, sources alleged.

Proper scanners are a need of the hour, if the Railways wants to ensure that proper security at the railway station. Currently, none of the luggage of passengers are subject to scrutiny. Also, the detectors which are supposed to frisk the passengers at the entrance are not being utilised.
