In an attempt to prompt use of non-conventional mode of energy, the Delhi division of Northern Railway (NR) is developing Bahadurgarh railway station, on the outskirts of Delhi, as a ‘green’ station.

The energy requirement of the Bahadurgarh station would be met with solar energy, a water harvesting system is also being developed at the station premises for optimum utilisation of the non-conventional energy resources. The station is being developed into green building as a pilot project, more stations in the Delhi division are likely to be developed on similar lines after it.

“Solar power panel with a capacity of 20 KW is going to be installed at the station and the power generated from it would be enough for the power requirement of platforms, circulating area, booking office and the service area,” said an NR official adding that all the expenses incurred in converting the existing station building into green building will be borne by the Indian Railway Finance Corporation Ltd.

As per the plan, a standalone solar light will also be provided at platforms to reduce electricity requirement from the main grid. An official said that apart from promoting use of non-conventional source of energy, railway’s authority is also emphasising on conservation of energy. Railway has decided to replace the existing high energy consuming lights with the energy efficient LED lights. These lights will not only help in reducing power consumption but also help the railway in generating revenue by saving electricity bills.

A water harvesting system is also being developed at the station premises to recycle the water used daily.
