Kolkata: A speeding train has been reported to have knocked three elephants dead in West Bengal. As per reports, another elephant has been injured badly.The forest minister, Hiten Barman said that the express train hits the animals near the Marghat forest that lies in the north of Kolkata.Due to the recent accidents, the activists have asked the trains to reduce their speed while passing through these areas, so that the elephants in that region remain safe.Barman, while talking to a leading daily said, "The train knocked down the elephants due to negligence of the driver."Jayant Sharma, a spokesperson from the Indian Railways said that the accident has taken place in the area that is far away from where the elephant actually resides. Also, he went on to say that the railway department had no notice from the forest department, regarding the presence of elephants in that particular region.However, the forest minister said, "Train accidents of this sort have of late become a concern in the northern districts of West Bengal."As per reports, 42 elephants have been killed in West Bengal since 2004. | ||
